Our purpose is to help the illiterate children in Africa by boosting interest in education by sending over books. The current literacy rate in the continent of Africa is varied, ranging from 28.7% up to 90.7%. The overall literacy rate in Africa is 60%, which is low compared to the 99% literacy rate in the United States. Many children, especially girls, are unable to get a decent education. Most children rarely go to secondary school, and often have to repeat grades because of the low quality of education and lack of supplies. My project will help give libraries, schools, and orphanages books for children to read and through this, nourish a yearning to read in children, by providing them with books collected from nearby libraries or private corporations. The books, which will be collected mainly from libraries around New Jersey, will be shipped over to English-speaking countries in Africa(starting with Kenya), and then delivered to libraries, schools, and orphanages around the country. In addition, we will give presentations at local libraries to raise awareness on the issue.
